experimental music is cool

There are some new dreams on the dream blog. I've also written extensively about the book House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski on the hipster book forum I share with my friends.

Monday night I went to The Empty Bottle for a free show. There was this band Soft Serve who according to my friend Erik, seemed like they were three chicks who saw Jem and the Holograms and decided they wanted to be in a band.

They definitely got the outfits right. However the delivery was akin to 8th grade basement slumber party. Complete with poorly-rehearsed choreography and a few technical mishaps. Erik said, "I bet you anything she's a performance major at SAIC.

Their costumes were so cute, though, that I took quite a few pics.

The main attraction of the evening was this consortium, of sorts, consisting of many many instrumentalists and a conductor. They were called something like Bubblegum ShitFace vs. somethingorother The conductor had two light boxes each equipped with several different color lights. Each light corresponded to a specific musician. The conductor also had these posterboards on which he'd write specific instructions. There was no point where I was able to read what he'd written. Here's a blurry pic of the conductor and his mind-controlling lightbox.

There were so many musicians, they were lined up in front of the stage as well as on it. The performance itself lasted pretty briefly. It seemed like it took them longer to set up than it did to perform. It was interesting, but I think it could have been better. It mostly didn't sound like music, just a lot of notes. I wish the percussionist would have actually played some beats. Occasionally there would be some actual melodies, but they would be short-lived and often drowned out. Here's a couple pics of the musicians.

I think there were:

  • acoustic guitarist
  • clarinet
  • small trumpet
  • 3 computers
  • percussionist
  • 2nd percussionist/lap harp
  • banjo
  • upright bass
  • violinist
  • electric guitarist
  • keyboardist

Wow. Lots of people. All in all, it was entertaining. There were a lot of people there, as well. Nice time.
