Garden State

I watched the film Garden State last night. It was really really good. For the writing/directorial debut of Zach Braff, I think it was exceptionally amazing. It was also an interesting message. In these times of medicating, self-medicating, these times of wanting always more, wanting to be happy, rather than just wanting to be, the message was this is life. It is no more and no less. It's really a powerful message being that it was a hollywood film. Hollywood is usually about the sensational or the extraordinary - and, don't get me wrong, there was a lot of sensationalism going on in the film, but the overall message was that life is just, life, and it is what it is. People seem to be focused on being happier, or worse, just not feeling bad. Yet, when you medicate these feelings away, as was done with Zach Braff's character, you lose all of it, the good, the bad, the ugly. Everything becomes a shade of grey as opposed to the panoply of color life really is.
